Team performance gains win for U13s
By Dave Brown
Excellent individual performances but possible because of foundation built by whole team performance.
One look at the scorecard for this game and you'd be drawn to some fine individual performances and expect that the match report would focus on those accomplishments. Those performances will be lauded and rightly so, but on the cricket field individuals can only perform on a foundation that is built by the team as a whole and it is the team performance that I will focus on first. Chenies won the toss and chose to bowl first (somewhat controversially in temperatures approaching 30 degrees!). As a team the bowling was very good with a reduced extras count and this helped to keep the scoring down, but the fielding was excellent. Every player contributed to the effort - there were good catches and a good run out, but what is not always obvious was the singles that were denied the opposition through excellent fielding, and the twos that became ones and the boundaries that were stopped and converted into ones or twos - everyone contributed and is why this was a fantastic team performance. Upon this foundation Alexander Poole
capitalised on the pressure that was built on the Ley Hill batters and he produced a superb spell of accurate bowling to achieve a very rare feat at this level, a five-for! In only 3 overs he managed to take 5 wickets for 9 runs. Ley Hill were bowled out for 90 in 17.3 overs.
Coach thought he'd be able to use Alexander's momentum and sent him out to open along with James Davies. However that didn't work as Alexander was dismissed for a duck. James dug in, doing especially well against Ley Hill's rapid opening bowler. Mattie Brown
joined James in the middle and after getting his eye in he then made it to 35 in quick time including 2 maximums. Henry James
then joined James and they both began to find the boundary with regularity and Chenies made it to the victory target in just 12.2 overs, Henry on 22* and James on 27*.
In summary, excellent batting from James, Mattie and Henry, but this was a relatively comfortable chase because of the excellent fielding performance from the whole team and Alexander's fantastic bowling. Well done all.
