Welcome to this week’s summary of all the news from around the club over the past 7 days.

The 1st XI started the day in 3rd place in the league, but a visit to 2nd placed Datchet provided the opportunity to climb back into the top 2. Chenies were asked to bat first. The pitch proved to be extremely tricky to bat on, but Alex Martin, in just his 3rd appearance for the ones, mastered the conditions to score 118. He was supported by Charlie Anderson (22), Majib Rehman (23) and Mattie Brown, who scored just 11 but belied his young years with a mature innings of over 12 overs that enabled Alex to build his innings at the other end and their 3rd wicket partnership was worth 64. Once Alex was out Suli Ahmed smashed 29 to take the total to 251-8 and Roger declared. The Chenies bowlers managed to put the ball on the right lengths more often than the Datchet bowlers and reaped the reward as Datchet were bowled out for 189. Suli Ahmed claimed 3 wickets with Waj Hussain and debutant Ben Cross each claiming 2. Chenies have duly climbed up to 2nd spot in the league.

The 2nd XI hosted league leaders Chalfont St Peter and took to the field first. The visitors opening partnership was worth 110 which gave them a platform to build an imposing target of 234 from their 40 overs. Max Higginbotham, Brian Shipley and Mark Rogers each picked up 2 wickets and Emily Brown produced an economical spell of 1-38 from 10 overs. The Chenies reply hinged on 54 from Mike Pickard, but no-one else could provide a score of note. A 43 run unbroken 10th wicket partnership between Max (19) and Emily (10) gave the Chenies innings respectability as they finished on 183-9.

Sunday was a historic day for English cricket to live long in the memory. The epic events at Lords could not stop the Sunday XI taking to the field in battle against Edgware. Chenies won the toss and batted. We amassed a total of 205 for 5 in 40 overs. Mike Pickard continued his recent form with the bat scoring 122 not out. He was ably supported by Mattie Brown (29), Jon Goddard (21) and Ian Gilmour (16). Edgware were initially kept quiet by some good economical bowling but their middle order contained some big hitters who lifted their run rate. The game could have easily turned in our favour when Alex Walker took a low catch at mid-on. The batsman, who went on to score 56, refused to walk and sadly the umpire declined to make a decision. On we battled but the friendly atmosphere was diminished. Edgware went on to win comfortably with overs to spare. Pick of the bowlers were Emily Brown (2-18 from 6 overs) and Alex walker (1-18 from 5 overs). A slightly early finish had a silver lining in allowing everyone to watch the drama unfold at Lords and to see England lift the world cup - we will settle for that!

Next week the 1st XI host Wooburn Narkovians and the 2s travel to High Wycombe. The Sunday XI have a home fixture against Ruislip Orientals.

Colts Matches:

On Sunday 7th the U13s played host to Farnham Common. In order to get the game underway Farnham batted first as they only had 7 players at the scheduled start time. Ayush and Jack reduced them to 25 for 2 after 5 overs and things were looking promising. Unfortunately the third wicket added a further 50 runs which was most annoying as both players were dropped when in single figures as was the case with the next 3 batters who all were put down. In fact we managed to put down 7 catchable catches and Farnham made us pay for it, posting a total of 136 for 7. This was not a reflection on our bowling which, with a better fielding performance, I doubt if Farnham would have reached 70 runs. Pick of the bowlers were Kai 2 for 10, Jack 1 for 14 and Ayush 2 for 13 with Varun and Pranaam taking the other wickets and the highlight being a brilliant one handed catch by Ayman who had replaced the injured Stuart behind the stumps. Our innings didn't get off to the best start with Ayush being bowled first ball and whilst Jamie, Varun, Matthew and Shashank added 40+ runs, the last 5 wickets fell for just 5 runs leaving Pranaam undefeated on 6 giving us a grand total of 58 all out. Amazingly Farnham took 5 catches, only dropping one. What do they say wins matches?

On Monday the U14 Girls played a home match versus Chalfont St Peter. The hosts won the toss and elected to take first innings. St Peter scored 91-7 in their 20 overs with Kari Hughes (2-7), Amelia Peck (1-4), Daisy Lawless (2-18) and Poppy Lewis (1-11) the leading bowlers. Youie Nichols had a great night behind the stumps taking 1 catch and 2 stumpings. The girls completed the chase comfortably in 14 overs with Roisin Grady scoring 21, Amelia Peck (19 not out) and Youie Nichols (13 not out).

On Tuesday the U11s hosted Knotty Green. The visitors elected to field after winning the toss. After a shaky start from our opening pair, a decent partnership formed in the shape of Seine and Will who accumulated 33 runs, followed by 19 from Jaran and Jasper as pair 3. This took us to a season best of of 265-2 at the end of the 16 overs with Charlie and Will holding the wicket against a very tall and fast county bowler! The visitors took to bat and were steadily building with a lead of 10 runs at the halfway stage. The final 8 overs saw the visitors stretch their lead with a partnership in the final 4 overs yielding over 35 runs with their county star claiming 33 of them taking them to a grand total of 313-0 at the finish. We played with great poise and balance and it was a joy to watch. Moreover, our performance even drew praise from none other than Colts Supremo John Campbell who doesn’t give praise lightly!

On Wednesday the U11s visited Beaconsfield for our last league match of the season who elected to bat after winning the toss. Playing on astroturf, the hosts set a target of 288/2 following some notable bowling performances from Seine (1-7) and Sasha (1-11) and with Jasper conceding only 5 runs from his 2 overs. We took to bat with our opening pair of Louisa and Sacha setting a decent foundation with Louisa securing 10 runs from 13 balls. This was followed by Seine in the second pair building with an additional 9 runs from 11 balls taking us to 225-1 at the halfway stage. We couldn’t quite build on the early momentum and wickets started falling. Despite a last ditch attempt by Will who secured 12 much needed runs in the final 4 overs, we got to 244-5 in the end. The result not being a fair reflection of the depth of quality within our squad, it sets the tone for where our off-season training efforts will focus - Batting!

On Wednesday, freed from the burden of GCSEs, the U16s played their first match of the season away at Wendover. The hosts batted first but were quickly reduced to 30-4 thanks to wickets from Mattie Brown, Amelia Peck and Ben Cross (2). From there the Wendover innings recovered with some very good batting and they amassed 170-5 from their 20 overs. Alex Walker (43) and Mattie Brown (26) got the Chenies reply off to a great start putting on 68 for the opening wicket. Henry James (13) and Ben Cross (14 not out) kept things going, but the required rate was beyond us. Lorenzo Bunn added a couple of lusty blows at the end but the innings ended on 127-5

Fri 12 July – U15 Girls v Farnham Royal (H) – no report received

On Friday the U9 Tigers visited Chalfont St Peter. Chenies batted first, scoring 338-5. Our innings contained solid batting contributions throughout the team with William Herring (13), Oliver Hatton (13), Shravan (12), Joseph Sear (10) and Eddie Ayres (9) leading the way. The CSP reply was 254-5. There was very consistent bowling, in particular from William (2-9), Rafa Williams (1-5), Spence Guthrie (1-6), Reyan Patel (1-7) and Eddie (0-3). It was a tremendous performance from the U9 Tigers again. We played the match away from home (even though it should have been a home game) in order to get the game on following a rain cancellation previously. We also had Oliver Hatton and Rafa Williams making their competitive debuts for C&L! They both slotted into the team very well and performed brilliantly. The C&L Tigers have now had 15 different boys (5 of whom are actually U8s!) representing the team this season along with the 12 boys who played for the C&L Lions, which shows great strength in depth. C&L Tigers ended the season with 4 wins from 4 in the to win the league, which combined with the C&L Lions 6 wins from 6 games on their way to being county champions means that the U9 year group have a perfect 10 from 10 - what a fabulous season from our very own Invincibles!

On Sunday we took both the U9 Lions and U9 Tigers to the Winchmore Hill U9 Tournament. The format was 6-a-side with 6 overs per innings. Every player bowled 1 over and each pair batting 2 overs. There were 12 teams in total and our Lions team were Champions ... with our Tigers team the runners-up! The organisers said they have never had 2 teams from the same club both make it to the final so it's a terrific achievement from all the boys - they were absolutely brilliant (in between trying to catch up on what was happening in the Cricket World Cup Final ... which also went pretty well!). Our Lions Team was Jeevan Brar, Max Fallon, Spencer Guthrie, Frank Harrop, William Herring and Freddie Jennings. We beat Chalfont St Giles by 119 runs, Beaconsfield by 92 runs and Winchmore Hill by 13 runs to reach the semi-final where we beat Cookham Dean by 56 runs. Our Tigers Team was Aaran Amin, Eddie Ayres, James Henderson, Harry Neal, Avi Patel and Max Schiavi. We beat Farnham Common by 16 runs, Wooburn Narkovians by 32 runs and The Lee by 50 runs to reach the semi-final where we beat Wendover by 8 runs. There were some great performances with our leading batters being Jeevan (133 from 37 balls), William (69 from 30), Max F (58 from 27), Freddie (53 from 27), Harry (53 from 34), Spencer (21 from 15) and Max S (22 from 20). There was also some excellent bowling with all the boys bowling 5 overs and our leading bowlers were Harry (2-21), Jeevan and William (both 3-33) and James (2-28).

An invitation from Club Welfare Officers, Julie Pickard and James Herring: Club Welfare means making everyone feel welcome, involved, happy and safe at Chenies. We want to find out what the Colts think about their experience. We eventually plan to set up and oversee a Colts Committee that we can use to influence and feed directly to the main Club Committee. As a first step to achieving this all Colts are invited to a Colts Meeting at 9.30am on Sunday 28th July to give us an idea of what we are doing well and what we can do better next season.
