Welcome to this week’s summary of all the news from around the club over the past 7 days.

I know that it is Tuesday again and the name “The Monday Roundup” definitely has to go. The best ideas so far are “The Blue & Gold Bulletin” or “Real Chenies News”, but I can’t help but think there’s a better name – let me know your ideas – I’ll buy a drink at the bar for whoever comes up with the best name.

The 1st XI made it 2 wins from 2 games in the league, but were made to work very hard by their opponents, Wooburn Narkovians. Chenies were asked to bat first and got off to a steady start. Ateeq Mohammed departed for 28 and Charlie Anderson came and went for 25. Waqas Kiani was holding the innings together and proceeded to see all subsequent partners come and go without any major partnerships built. A rain delay took some of the momentum out of the innings but Chenies eventually got to 196 with Waqas carrying his bat for 59 not out. Some aggressive striking by the Wooburn top order kept their chase up with the rate, but regular wickets (2 to Rich Parker) pegged them back. But a couple of lower middle order partnerships swung the balance of the game back in their favour. With 1 over to go (bowled by Ateeq) they needed 6 to win, but 2 wickets from the first 2 balls brought their no. 11 to the crease. A dot and then a single; 5 from 2 balls required. Scrambling back for a 2 (the run out appeal was denied despite the crowd and most players believing the finger should have gone up) meant 3 needed from the last ball. A drive into the covers was pounced on by Mike Pickard to limit them to a single and Chenies won by 1 run.

The 2nd XI hosted High Wycombe 5th XI. Having won the toss and put the oppo into bat, Max Higginbotham and, especially Alex Walker were bowling well and felt a wicket was highly likely, consequently we were disappointed not to take a wicket before drinks but happy the runs conceded were reasonably within control. We often say drinks bring about a change and to dismiss their best bat in the second over after drinks opened the door to two more quickly after. However, we only took one more wicket and HW ended with 193-4. All the bowlers (Max H, Alex W, Tom H, Brian S and Sean L) bowled well and 193 on a Chenies wicket, whilst a challenge, did feel gettable in 40 overs. But a rain delay reset the total to 143 in 25 overs leaving us to chase at a run a ball. A slow start had the crowd worried but an innings setting start by Billy Mead and Alex Martin added 75 in 12 of the 25 overs. Sensible hitting from Alex M, ending with 92, ably supported by Billy, Mark Rogers and Max H saw us home with 9 balls to spare, a fantastic and important win at our new level. Well done all of the 2’s

Next week the 1st XI travel to Burnham and the 2s host Beaconsfield 3s.

Colts Matches:

Firstly apologies to giving the U13’s defeat to Ley Hill last Sunday short shrift in last week’s column! Here is the full report: Chenies won the toss and elected to field. This seemed like a good decision as we had Ley Hill 12 for 3 after 4 overs thanks to some excellent bowling from Varun Dokka and Jack Lawless. Unfortunately a 50 partnership for the 4th wicket put Ley Hill in a strong position and they went on to score 103 for 7 in 20 overs. Jack was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 10 off 3 overs closely followed by Varun with 2 for 15, Pranaam 1 for 13 and Aayush 1 for 8. Chasing such a total with only 9 players was going to be a tall order especially with the oppositions bowling attack. Wickets fell at regular intervals with no one “getting in” and we were bowled out for 59. Special mention to Xaynab and Udit who hung around for the last wicket to get us past the 50 mark.
On Monday the U9 Lions made it 3 wins from 3 with an 89 run victory away at Gerrards Cross. Chenies won the toss and elected to field and then took 13 GX wickets for just 78 runs (Barrington net score – 200). Noa Fonseka took a hat-trick and both he and Harry Neal returned figures of 3-4 and Jeevan Brar took 2-4. Jeevan also took an excellent low catch as wicket-keeper, diving forwards to snare a wicket for Oscar Knight off the last ball of the GX innings. C&L Lions scored 143 runs and lost 9 wickets to end with a Barringtons score of 289. Jeevan Brar and Frank Harrop added 20 in their 4 overs, and Zac Saul (top scoring on his birthday) and Max Fallon added 46 from their 4 overs to be our most productive batting pair.

Also on Monday the U15s were visited by High Wycombe for local cricket’s version of the traditional FA Cup third round tie. Fortunately the pitch was not a lower division quagmire and unfortunately the banana skins we laid out proved not to be slippery enough and HW cruised to victory. They batted first and amassed a score of 189-6. It could have been much worse as they got to 3 figures inside 9 overs, but Chenies pulled it back very well in the 2nd half of the innings. The Chenies reply was ended in the 19th over with the score on 54 with only skipper Amelia Peck making double figures (15). The cup dream is over for another year, but now we can focus on the league!
On Tuesday the U13s travelled to Beaconsfield. The hosts won the toss and chose to field. The wicket was certainly “doing a bit” and run scoring was difficult with the frequent fall of wickets. However thanks to some wayward bowling by the opposition (a total of 27 wides and 9 no balls) the score moved along nicely especially when Aayush came to the crease, scoring 29 not out from a total of 88 all out in 20 overs. Beaconsfield must have fancied chasing that total down but they hadn't taken into account our bowling which was awesome! Varun 1 for 2, Jack 2 for 14, Aayush 2 for 6, Ayush 2 for 8, Matthew 1 for 1, Shashank 1 for 4 and Kai taking the last wicket with the first ball of his first over, skittled them for 37 in 10.1 overs. Outstanding performance all round with everyone making a contribution with special mention for Stuart who after a dodgy start, did a great job behind the stumps and Aayush who was late arriving but still managed to top score, take 2 wickets and hold 2 quality catches.

On Wednesday the U14 Girls enjoyed a convincing win at Chalfont St Giles. The hosts decided to bat first but were bowled out for 53 with Jasmine Webber taking 2 wickets and Sophia Davies effecting 2 run-outs. Chenies then completed the chase in 6 overs albeit managing to lose 5 wickets along the way, Caitlin Walker top scored with 14.

The U15 Girls were in action on Thursday away at Burnham. Chenies were asked to bat first . Sophia Davies (16) and Lara Daurka (10) got us off to a good start, but once wickets started to fall, they continued to fall and it was left to Caitlin Walker (27) to strike a late flurry of boundaries to take the score up to 96. The Burnham reply started brilliantly for Chenies; bowling the 2nd over, Emily Brown produced a triple wicket maiden. But Burnham then dug in to complete the chase comfortably inside 13 overs with only 4 wickets down.

The U11s had their game on Tuesday cancelled but did play at home to Chalfont St Peter on Thursday. No result or report yet so this will be covered in next week’s column.

On Saturday morning the U10 All Stars hosted Knotty Green. Chenies were asked to bat first C&L scoring 125 runs for 8 wickets to set a target of 277. Aarav Majithia top scored with 23 from 12 balls, including 6 boundaries in a row at one point to get our innings off to a great start! Jeevan Brar took scored 12 from 10 balls. Tight bowling kept the visitors’ reply to 238-6 to earn Chenies the win by 39 runs. Aarav Majithia took 2/7 and Jeevan Brar took 1/0. There was some very tidy wicket-keeping from Jeevan Brar and Harry Neal (when Jeevan was bowling) and only 1 bye was conceded in the innings. This was the first hardball match for the U9s and they were playing a year-group up in the U10 league so that makes the win even more impressive. The boys were excellent in dealing with wet conditions and the ball needing to be dried on a regular basis. Katie Knight was also excellent in providing hot dogs for the boys at the mid-innings break!
