Our new scoreboard is finally here

Those of you who visited the club over the weekend may have noticed our new scoreboard, which is now in situ.

With technology advancing rapidly in all walks of life, cricket scoring is no exception and the new scoreboard allows us to take advantage of these advancements.

Before we expand on the new, let’s take a moment to pay homage to our old scoreboard. As a club, we were ahead of the game in terms of installing an electric scoreboard (no-one can remember exactly when it was installed but it is believed to be circa 1994/5, so it has served us well for nearly 30 years). Moreover, we did not buy it, rather it was designed and built by a member of the club, Cliff Graves. But in the last couple of years it has been showing its age a bit – some of the digits didn’t work all the time and the cable under the ground rose to the surface where it was unable to withstand the heat of our annual bonfire - this was painstakingly repaired by Viv Bartlett and the club are exceptionally grateful to him for extending the life of the scoreboard.

But, now is the time to embrace the future. Online / electronic scoring is going to become the norm and technology allows for the operation of scoring software and scoreboards to be integrated. And that is exactly what we’ve bought. There is a console which facilitates scoreboard operation is the normal way, but it is also possible to connect a device (phone, tablet or laptop) to the console so that changes made on the scoring software on the device are also made on the scoreboard. The connection between console and device can even be made by Bluetooth so that scoring on a device can be done from anywhere inside the Bluetooth range, allowing colts managers to score and umpire simultaneously.

Significant work has gone into the acquisition and installation of the scoreboard. The work has been lead by Mark Rogers, so big thanks to him. Others have helped along the way: Alex Martin, Tom Horsburgh, Ben Cross and Ethan Baggott dug the holes for the support posts (not an easy job as the holes had to be a metre deep). Sean Lawless (Linear Construction) helped Mark acquire and set the support posts.

Max Higginbotham made some girders to support the posts and Richard Mitchell (+ his daughter), Mike Pickard, Pete Naylor-Smith and Shamir Patel helped Mark mount the scoreboard. Thanks to all for their input and effort.

Now we can enjoy a fantastic new scoreboard which future proofs us in terms of scoring for the next few years.
