Chenies U13 Lions hosted Great Brickhill CC for their first Long format ( 35 overs a side) game on a warm Wednesday afternoon on 6th August. Winning the toss, Chenies elected to bat first. We found ourselves in trouble soon losing both openers early, and at 17/2 with some of our regulars missing, it looked ominous. Ayan and Garv steadied the innings with a 45-run partnership before Garv fell for a well-made 12 off 45 balls, seeing off the new ball threat. Aran Brar, promoted up the order, then joined Ayan- batted with freedom getting his maiden 50 including 5 fours in a single over from their opening bowler. The pair put together 121. Ayan making a polished 69 off 82 anchoring the innings, while Aran made a superb 58 off 57. Daniel and Haris finished the innings with some lusty hitting. 193/5 off 35 overs against a quality bowling attack comprising pace and spin was a top effort. With 194 to defend, we were sitting pretty as Daniel (2/28) and Haris (2/21) dismantled their top order. At 41/4, we had our noses ahead. Our bowlers bowled well in the middle - Kiyaan, Amogh & Manuth bowled tidely, but they say catches win matches, we didn't take ours and with extras mounting, the opposition was always ahead of the run rate. With as many as 30 runs off misfields, we left ourselves a mountain to climb, the opposition needing just 36 off the last 10 to win with wickets in hand. Sam then donned the gloves, braving the injury he picked up while batting and we tightened our act. Dhani ( 0/21 off 5), Ayan ( 1/16 off 5.4) and Aran ( 1/35 off 7) got us back in the game, with 20 needed off 18. With 12 needed off the last 2, it was anyone's game- unfortunately a streaky four and a 6 off the last ball of the 34th left Ayan 2 to defend in the final over. With 3 dots including a wicket, it looked like we could do the great escape but a lucky slice past point meant we subsided to a close loss. It is fair to say that it wasn't our day in the field, and our misfields meant a comfortable win was turned to a loss. Lots of positives to take though - several of our players had their first exposure to long format games, and we kept fighting till the end, our batters showed the temperament to bat long and dug us out of a hole and our bowlers all bowled well. We have a few more long format games to follow, hopefully with a great result to show for our efforts.

An appeal for further help to run the club
Our wonderful club has seen unprecedented growth over the past few years. Credit goes to everyone at the club for facilitating this, but special credit goes to the management committee for working so hard to develop and grow the club.
The downside to this is that the workload upon the committee has also grown such that it is no longer possible for our officials to cope and run the club efficiently or effectively.
We are therefore appealing for members to come forward to help.
The first appeal is for someone to take up the position of Sponsorship Manager: Sponsorship is a significant yet untapped opportunity for funding at our club. We are looking for someone to manage and nurture our existing sponsors, and to proactively work to develop new sponsorship partnerships. The role could easily be shared among 2 or 3 people. If you are interested please speak to Dave Brown or Simon Hargreaves.
Our mantra is ‘many hands make light work’ and we are looking for 2, 3 or 4 people in each of the following areas to form a small team working with the committee member responsible for that area. None of these are committee positions so you don’t have to worry about coming along to meetings; all we’re asking is to get involved and help out in a way that suits you:
Area | Committee Member | No. People required |
Website / Membership | Dave Brown | 2-3 |
BFN & Events, plus planning for the club’s 150th Anniversary | Rohin Modasia | 3-4 |
Funding / Grants | Nick Walker | 2-3 |
Our bar is going from strength to strength under the stewardship of Mick French. But he can’t be there all the time and if we are going to open more frequently with publicised hours then we’ll need volunteers to take on shifts behind the bar. If you’re interested in joining a group of volunteers who could take on shifts occasionally then please contact Mick (mickbeernut@gmail.com / 07771 866370)
