The Blue & Gold Bulletin - 4th July

Dave Brown4 Jul - 15:36

All the updates from around the club.

What a bounce back for the 1s this week, and in some style too. Under yet another blazing sun, the skipper won the toss and had no hesitation batting first on a true deck at home. A brand new opening combo of Alex M and Stef B walked out and put on an absolute clinic, both reaching superb centuries, even finding themselves on 99 at the same time at one point. Cool heads, classy strokes and a perfectly paced opening stand laid the platform, with some late fireworks from Stef S and Mattie lifting us to 287/5 from the 45, a top-drawer team innings and a response after last week’s collapse. With 287 on the board, things started well. Hounslow & Whitton found themselves 38/2 and we were in control. But their number 4 had other plans, launching a few into orbit, including one monster six off the skipper, as they say, you can’t get hit that far if you don’t put the pace on the ball. He raced to a dangerous 40 before Ted, having shelled one earlier, took a ridiculous catch to turn the tide. Ted would go on to pouch two more, proof that he might just be an alright fielder after all. But the real star with the ball was Jawad, who tore through the middle order to claim a richly deserved five-for. Hounslow were eventually bowled out for 183, and it was job done in emphatic fashion. A brilliant all-round performance and just the response we needed. Chalfont St Giles next, momentum is building!
The 2nd XI were away to High Wycombe 5th XI at Widmer End. From the boundary the pitch looked more like a subcontinental day 5 wicket, from up close more like a Greek goat herders run. The pitch along with the rule that 6’s downhill only gets you 4 runs all felt very “village”. Let us say it was a toss to win and bowl on, which unfortunately the High Wycombe captain did. Chenies got off to a difficult start with their young left arm quicks taking out both openers early, Ian Gilmour (31) Ali Jawad (14) steadied the ship and applied some pressure but the pitch had the final say, brining Kiran Vadlamani to the crease. Kiran’s fluent ball striking, 52 off 59 deliveries, helped to push the run rate along and with the long tail wagging, Brian Shipley (25), Max Higgingbotham (27) and Sandeep Kumar (18) we managed to get to 209 for 9 off the 40 overs. With the pitch looking baked and less variable bounce, we were encouraged by an early wicket from Anand Sharma however wickets after that were hard to come by. An inspired spell from Emily Brown before the drinks break resulted in 2 more wickets which had us on track at the halfway stage 89 for 3 with another 111 for victory. Unfortunately, we could not apply the pressure required after the break and their batsman started to find the boundary at will and moved past the Chenies total with 3 overs to spare. Pick of the bowlers was Emily Brown 2 for 17 and Anand Sharma who also picked up 2 wickets.
The 3rd XI hosted Slough 7. They lost. By a lot. No report was filed.
Over to Luke for his weekly ramblings: We ventured south to Wraysbury where they won the toss and stuck themselves in on a very batter-friendly deck. First wicket fell to a quite frankly village run out (well done Donny). After that, a string of good scores took them up to 286-8 from their 40 overs. Bowling-wise, Donnel was the standout, picking up 3 wickets and generally being everywhere. Papa Teckchandani bowled tidily in his shorts taking a very well deserved wicket - there is no greater pleasure for me than seeing father/son teammates on Sundays, that's what its all about boys! Mr Keerthivasan, Henderson and Anderson (ohhhhh jimmy jimmy) kept it tight in the middle overs contributing with wickets, as well as a couple of dropped chances (standard), a few wides (also standard). We opened up with P Naylor-Smith and D Layzell, who got us off to a slow but steady start. Pete fell lbw early, and things unravelled a bit from there. Donnel, once again, decided to carry the rest of us – cracking 80 off 66 with 13 fours, easily the best knock of the day and looked a class above. Mr Sharavana chipped in with a handy 10, Himanshu added a neat 20, and S.K. gave it a proper go with a composed 17. But wickets kept falling and the required rate climbed. Eventually all out for 185 in 36.2 overs. Lost by 101 runs. Could’ve been worse. Could’ve been raining. Another Sunday, another learning experience (we’re calling it that). Thank you very much Ravi for fielding for most of the game in shorts and a shirt because we were a man short - you're the man!!!
Back at the CCG, the Women welcomed Slough 2 for game week 2 of the league. Chenies lost the toss and were invited to bat first. A quick start saw the openers (Emily B and Emma B) put on 36 in just 4.2 overs. Then a couple of quick wickets slowed us down, but a foundation was built. Avani and Emily put on 79 for the 3rd wicket before Emily fell for 47, agonisingly close to a maiden half century. But Avani continued, past 50 and onward. Unfortunately she ran out of balls and was left stranded on 98 when the innings drew to a close. But a score of 216-7 was a fantastic team effort. The Slough openers put the pressure straight back on the home side with a partnership of 89 which could only be broken with a fortuitous run out. But this breakthrough was key and despite the other opener remaining unbeaten, regular wickets at the other end saw Slough bowled out for 146 inside 29 overs to see the chenies women record back to back wins.
Next week the 1st XI travel to Chalfont St Giles and the 2nd XI host Uxbridge 4s at the CCG. Unfortunately, we have had to forfeit the 3s match as we do not have sufficient availability. The Sunday XI have a game at home against Outlaws and the Women 1st XI visit Beaconsfield.

U12 Lions vs GX. Chenies and Latimer won by 9 wickets. The juggernaut that this U12 Lions team is, continued to roll against a visiting GX side. It was a great bowling performance, with all the bowlers up top keeping a tight leash on run scoring , on a day where getting wickets was tough. The riches were reaped in the back 10, as we restricted them to 84. Fielding at times did reflect a side which had won 7 in a row ( can’t blame them for getting complacent!) Haris Munir was the standout fielder with his energy, Dhiren the pick of the bowlers with great support from Charlie, Harry, Haris & Kiyaan (his energetic self as skipper) and they all had a wicket to show for their efforts. 84 was never going to be enough - we polished off the chase in less than 10 overs, courtesy of Sam & Charlie’s 60 odd partnership, before Sam & Ayan finished the job. Sam top scoring with an unbeaten 39. Overall, that makes it 8 wins on the trot and the opportunity to finish the league season unbeaten now beckons. Next up we pay a visit to GX next week on 9th July. Thanks to the parents for turning up to support.

U14 Destroyers: Chenies and Latimer, 99 lost to Wendover, 100 in last ball heartache. Not really sure where to start with this one. This is a game that will live long in the memory as an absolute classic. This was the World Cup final all over again but sadly we were on the wrong end of a wonderful contest. Having won the toss, skipper Rafe chose to bat. A positive start soon became difficult with an early run out of Mayank and Ashworth joined him by getting out endeavouring to continue the positive start. Reyan and Ali-Jawad tried to stabilise the innings until Reyan drove straight to point leaving us facing an uphill task. Ali-Jawad steadied the innings and played a composed innings of 35 off 40 balls ably supported by Aron Banks which gave the platform to Jesal and Dhiren to strike some runs and give us a punchers chance at defending the score. Rafe set up his bowlers really well and a great opening spell from Aryan and Luke, with follow up overs from Dhiren and Rafe left Wendover on 40 odd runs after 10. Whilst they lost wickets, the stranglehold we put with some excellent fielding none more so epitomised by Ashwarth. Ayan, Mayank continued the great work interspersed with a good over from Jesal. When Reyan removed Harry Godens, Wendover needed 8 runs an over. Some imperious bowling from Mayank and Reyan left the equation down to 13 off the last over. The first bowl went for 6 followed by 2 dot balls. 7 off 3 became 5 off 2. This reduced to 3 off 1. The last ball was hit high in the air. The catch was dropped and the game was set to be tied. Unfortunately, the fielder over threw and Wendover completed the last run required. Whilst it was a painful loss, we would like to highlight the wonderful effort and spirit shown by the team in defending a low total. It was not to be but not without a fight. Our U14’s are like lions and if we continue to put the same effort in, the outcome will change. We know as a team we can score more runs and we need to focus our efforts to improve our batting. On a final note, despite such a close game, it’s worth mentioning the needful hospitality and sportsmanship demonstrated by both sides and our sincere thanks to Wendover for hosting what was the match of the season. Well done everyone and thank you.

An appeal for further help to run the club
Our wonderful club has seen unprecedented growth over the past few years. Credit goes to everyone at the club for facilitating this, but special credit goes to the management committee for working so hard to develop and grow the club.
The downside to this is that the workload upon the committee has also grown such that it is no longer possible for our officials to cope and run the club efficiently or effectively.
We are therefore appealing for members to come forward to help.
The first appeal is for someone to take up the position of Sponsorship Manager: Sponsorship is a significant yet untapped opportunity for funding at our club. We are looking for someone to manage and nurture our existing sponsors, and to proactively work to develop new sponsorship partnerships. The role could easily be shared among 2 or 3 people. If you are interested please speak to Dave Brown or Simon Hargreaves.
Our mantra is ‘many hands make light work’ and we are looking for 2, 3 or 4 people in each of the following areas to form a small team working with the committee member responsible for that area. None of these are committee positions so you don’t have to worry about coming along to meetings; all we’re asking is to get involved and help out in a way that suits you:

Area Committee Member No. People required
Website / Membership Dave Brown 2-3
BFN & Events, plus planning for the club’s 150th Anniversary Rohin Modasia 3-4
Funding / Grants Nick Walker 2-3

Our bar is going from strength to strength under the stewardship of Mick French. But he can’t be there all the time and if we are going to open more frequently with publicised hours then we’ll need volunteers to take on shifts behind the bar. If you’re interested in joining a group of volunteers who could take on shifts occasionally then please contact Mick (mickbeernut@gmail.com / 07771 866370)
