The Editor has decided to mix things up this week and we’ll start with the 3rd XI for a change:
An unfamiliar looking Chenies 3rd XI achieved a deserved and unexpected away win against OMT 4th XI, comfortably chasing down 162 runs on a decent batting track with three great debut performances. Asked to bowl first, Chenies’ openers James Louw and Emma Braddock contained OMT superbly, James only conceding a smattering of singles as he finished with remarkable figures of 0-10 from his eight overs. Emma, on debut, conceded just 18 from her first six overs, and eventually took two late wickets to end 2-28. OMT never really recovered from the slow start and apart from a handy fifth-wicket stand never looked settled against some quality mid-innings bowling from Nick Walker (2-32) and Luke Marsden (2-36). Kartikeya Kokkula (1-38), also on debut, snaffled a wicket down the stretch, and John Moffit’s tight lines resulted in returns of 1-14 from his 4 overs. In reply, Chenies were anchored superbly by John, who scored a fantastic 66. Luke hit a quickfire 30 and Simon Carter, completing the trio of debutants, hit 26no as Chenies closed out the game with more than 3 overs to spare. Chenies 3s buoyantly move on to a home game against High Wycombe 5th XI at Hawridge on Saturday.
The 2nd XI faced Boyne Hill at home on Saturday and it proved to be a good day all-round. Having lost the toss Boyne Hill decided to bowl first. Chenies got off to a slowish start on a good batting wicket and were 19 for 1 after 9 overs. Credit to Boyne Hill’s opening bowlers for restricting opportunities to score. Mike Pickard came in and added 60 runs for the second wicket with Milan Lad. When Milan was caught out for 19 Steve Hallam joined Mike at the crease and they put on a further 60 runs to move the innings into a better position for the final push. Mike Pickard scored 51 and Steve was caught out on 46. Gaurav Mehta (31) and Brian Shipley (20) were both not out at the finish with the score on 200 for 4 from 40 overs. In reply Boyne Hill looked to be well on course to chase down the score when their openers put on 54 runs. Our bowling however was at its best for the season and much tighter than in recent weeks. Once we made the initial breakthrough Boyne Hill lost their impetus and the run rate started to creep up. Tom Horsburgh was on fine form finishing with an excellent 5 for 36 off 7.1 overs. A superb catch on the boundary by Kiran Vadlamani dismissed their dangerous wicket keeper batsman and gave Steve Hallam a well deserved wicket. The wickets were shared among the other bowlers Roger Vessey 1-25, Mark Rogers 1-30 and Brian Shipley 1-23. Fittingly Tom clean bowled their last man in the last over and the first win of the season was sealed. Boyne Hill all out for 168.
So, with wins for both the 2s and 3s, could the 1st XI make it a 3 win Saturday? Unfortunately not! Playing on the pitch next to the 3s at Merchant Taylor’s school, the 1s batted first and amassed a creditable 246 from their 45 overs. Alex Martin top scored with 57, but was out for the first time this league campaign in his 4th innings (309 runs for once out is a remarkable achievement). Following Alex’s dismissal, scores in the twenties from Harry Dahiya, Mattie Brown, Ateeq Mohammed and Richard Mitchell saw Chenies moving comfortably towards the 200 mark, but an excellent 38 from Ansur Mahmood gave added late innings impetus to see us up to 246-9. The hosts’ chase got off to a steady start, scoring at just above 5 an over for the first 12 overs, but the introduction of Ian Gilmour and Dave Brown into the attack slowed down the run rate. Ian had both openers caught behind (by Mattie Brown, keeping for the first time at this level and doing an excellent job) and Dave took a further 2 wickets at the other end. Moreover, the economy rates of Ian (4.75) and especially Dave (1.4), brought the game back in Chenies’ favour. The pressure claimed another wicket as a run out was affected. With 16 overs to go OMT needed 130 to win with only 5 wickets in hand. But with their no.3 still at the crease and a willing ally in the form of their no. 7 (who used his 2nd life having survived a very good LBW appeal first ball!!) adopted an aggressive approach to the chase, and despite losing one more wicket, they eased home with 7 balls to spare.
Sunday, and the long awaited game vs our friends at Lords Travellers finally arrived, although the weather was rather chilly. Chenies lost the toss and were asked to bat on a good track. The teams were mixed up and several Chenies regulars played for LTCC in an effort to balance out the teams. Milan Lad and Luke Marsden got us off to a steady start of 47 in 14 overs , against the tight, fast bowling of Vinay and the inswing of Al. At the demise of Milan , Luke was joined by Sabari and there followed a good partnership of 60 in just 10 overs before Luke fell for 46 caught in the deep trying to get his 50. The middle order struggled against tight bowling and we lost regular wickets, and once Sabari fell for a well constructed 30, the innings fell away. However, right at the end Brian Shipley hit a quick fire 23 including 17 off the last over to get the home side up to 173 in 40 overs. This was always going to be a very tough score to defend despite a very good opening spell from Tom Horsburgh - following his Saturday form, and Kiran who bowled their opener. This brought Steve Hallam and Ed Hewens to the crease, who both started defensively and then expanded their range of shots in a very good partnership of well over 100. Ronald Eltringham and Brian tried their utmost to get the breakthrough, but unfortunately the only chance offered by Steve was missed. Their batting was a real showcase of how to play straight and construct an innings and once Steve reached 75 he retired to allow young Siddi (another Chenies colt!) to bat. He scored an impressive 23 not out as LTCC reached their target in 34 overs. The game was played in a great spirit and many stayed behind afterwards. LTCC were just too strong for us on the day , but there were many positives from the game.
Next week the 1st XI host Chalfont St Peter, the 2nd XI visit Ruislip and the 3rd XI are at home against High Wycombe. Before that, there is a friendly on Friday at home against Chritchurch CC, a touring side from Kent, and there is the Jubilee event on Thursday. At the moment there is no Sunday game, but if there is sufficient availability then we’ll try to get a fixture.
Colts:
The colts season is now fully up and running with many matches having taken place.
Sunday 22nd May, Chalfont St Giles U9’s V Chenies and Latimer U8’s Lightning. The U8’s first ever match was an away trip to Chalfont St Giles to play there U9’s. Having lost the toss and asked to bat the boys started really well with Noah Darling and Lohan Vadlapati putting on 34 runs in their 4 overs. Tom Parker and Ben Warner then put in a solid partnership to keep the runs following. Gus Gilmour and Louie Crowe stepped it up and put on 36 runs in their 4 overs. Vincent Tustin-Dodd and Rishi Tokeria batting out the innings as Lightning finished on an extremely high score of 292. In the field the Lightning kept up the pressure taking some early wickets with Noah Darling finishing with the best figures of 3 for 5 off his two overs including a wicket with the very first ball of the innings (caught and bowled). Everyone bowled extremely well with no one going for more than 4.5 an over and in total only bowling 8 wides and 2 no balls. This tight bowling and outstanding fielding made it really hard for Chalfont St Giles. As they finished their innings on 223 meaning the Lightning won by 69 runs. An awesome performance from all of the boys in the very first competitive match.
Sunday 29th May, Chenies and Latimer U8’s Lightning V Chesham U9’s B. Having lost the toss and asked to bat the Lightning started well with the opening pair of Freddie Neal and Noah Darling putting on 27 runs off their 4 overs. Next was Tom Parker and Ben Warner who kept the runs going against some very good quick bowling from Chesham. The third pair of Alex Yeo and Sean Edmondson carried on where Tom and Ben left off to keep the scoreboard ticking over. With Rivan Joshi and Jamie Black batting out the final 4 overs. Lightning finished their innings on a respectful 250 runs. The boys knew that they were going to need to bowl and field really well against a strong Chesham side and they didn't fail. All 8 players bowled and fielded extremely well and were always keeping Chesham back by taking wickets throughout the innings. Just like last week the boys bowled a great line and length. This was shown as they only bowled 7 wides and 3 no balls throughout the innings. Compared to Chesham’s 19 wides and 9 no balls. Everyone contributed with the ball with Lightning taking a total of 9 wickets in the 16 overs. Some notable bowling figures were Noah Darling finishing with 2 for 4 off his 2 overs, Ben Warner finishing with 1 for 4 and Freddie Neal finishing with 1 for 8. Unfortunately it wasn’t quite enough against a strong batting side and Chesham finished with 261 runs to win by just 11 runs. The boys should be very proud of themselves over the last two weeks and all of them are developing into some very good cricketers.
Sun 29th May Chenies & Latimer U8 Thunder 225, lost to Chesham U9 Falcons 307, Sunday the 29th May saw Chenies & Latimer U8's Thunder opening their 1st game of the season vs Chesham U9's Falcons. Having lost the toss The Thunder batted 1st making 225 with a fantastic 23 score from Angus Gilmour backed up Theodore Smith 10 and Vincent Tustin-Dodd making 5 not out. Some very good bowling from Chesham saw bowlers O Leak & M Pandav taking 7 wickets between them. Defending 225 the Thunder started very well in the field with Jaxon Cabban bowling and taking his first wicket of the season with a brilliant catch from Viaan Soneji. A special mention in the field for Max Walker and Neev Lulla with some amazing run saving stops and a run out from Harrison Hughes that the Great Jonty Rhodes would have been proud of. Chesham proved to be just too strong in the latter part of their innings and made a very good score of 307 in their 16 overs.
Chenies U15s girls (169-2) beat Dinton CC U15s girls (125-2) by 44 runs. After a rain delay, Captain Ruby Daurka won the toss and elected to bat. Samiha Bajpayee and Holly Milburn gave us a strong start against some fierce and fast bowling. The accurate bowling proved the demise of Holly early in the 3rd over though. Louisa Peck walked onto the pitch eager to score some runs, but without losing her wicket, and that is exactly what both her and Samiha did. They both were closing in on the 50 run mark by the 16th over, but sadly Samiha was bowled out with only 2 runs away from her retirement. Yet that didn’t ruin Samiha’s spirit as she walked off the pitch with beaming smile on her face very proud of what she had achieved. Shortly after Samiha’s wicket, Louisa retired with 50 runs off 41 balls in the early 18th over. An innings with style and panache. Alice Godfrey and Dhyani Desai finished the innings strongly scoring multiple runs. With the light beginning to dim Dinton, came into bat, Louisa opened the bowling with style that kept the run chase difficult to obtain. Avani bowled on target multiple times and Dinton were unable to score runs. Samiha then bowled an incredible over securing our first wicket. After this Dinton’s running slowed down and the ball was repeatedly in the air but the ball was always landing short of any fielder. In the 19th over with too many runs to chase the opposition edged the ball and Aemelia H took a great catch. The target for Dinton was too great and they ran out of overs. A comfortable victory for the unbeaten Chenies U15s girls.

Chenies village will play a prominent part in the celebrations on that day with the lighting of the jubilee beacon at 9.15pm on that evening. We are planning a day of fun for all the family at the club. A 6-a-side tournament is planned, and a BBQ will be available in the evening. The TV will be showing the pageantry from central London and, as mentioned, the beacon will be lit at 9.45pm. We’ve even organised a flypast from the Red Arrows, but that depends on the direction of the wind on the day. So, book the day in your diary to spend at the club and please mark your availability on Pitchero to play in the 6-a-side tournament.
